Karatu Hospital
Karatu Lutheran Hospital is located in Karatu District, 146 km from Arusha, the northern tourist hub and safari capital of Tanzania. Owned by the Lutheran Church of Tanzania under the Northern Diocese, the hospital holds the status of a Council Designated Hospital (CDH). This means it acts as a referral center for dispensaries and health centers within the Karatu district. The hospital operates in partnership with the government of Tanzania through the Karatu District Council.
OUR VISIT IN OCTOBER 2024
In October 2024, Mwika visited Karatu Hospital and had productive discussions with Dr. Heriel, the hospital manager, and Emmanuel, who handles IT. Despite facing significant ICT challenges, we were impressed by Dr. Heriel’s enthusiasm and realistic vision. He firmly believes that IT can elevate the hospital to the next level, improving efficiency and healthcare delivery. He acknowledged the need for investment and expressed deep gratitude for the support we can offer in the coming years.
Emmanuel was also excited about the opportunity to meet with us and is eager to receive training and support on the basics of networking and security.
During our visit, we installed a new firewall for Karatu and began assessing the requirements for the new network to be built. Mark Denning from KCMC visited Karatu again in early November, accompanied by a team from a cable installation company, to lay both fiber and UTP cables. Once the installation is complete, we can proceed with building a new LAN/WLAN network, improving both security and network availability.
